Bunny Care

When transitioning your bunny…

  • Make sure it has fresh water at all times. Water bottles are easy and work well. Some rabbits can choose not to drink out of them though, so keep an eye out and make sure they are drinking enough water. Crocks or bowls are another alternative but can be dumped or become soiled easily so it’s important to check them frequently.
  • I like to feed Blue Seal Show Hutch Deluxe 17 that is available at Tractor Supply but you can choose any feed. Any Blue Seal, Dumor or Oxbow brand I have liked. Just make sure that whatever you choose does not have corn or soy ingredients and is a healthy mix for your bunny. I have provided transition feed to mix with your new feed for the first week or so. Start with half transition feed and half new feed and gradually decrease it. Rabbits can be very sensitive so make sure the switch is gradual and keep an eye on how they do with the new feed.
  • Oats also help with Digestion. We feed 1 teaspoon of oats almost daily to all of our bunnies, especially under 6 months of age. Also they genuinely like the oats!
  • Unlimited TIMOTHY HAY is essential! No alfalfa. It is too rich. Anything timothy or a timothy/orchard grass mix is great!

At 6 months of age…

  • ½ cup of feed per day. This can be all at once or spilt up into 2 feedings.
  • Fresh unlimited TIMOTHY HAY.
  • 1 teaspoon of old fashioned oats at least weekly.

Treats…

  • Treats should not be given to any bunny under 6 months of age.
  • At 6 months treats can be given a couple times a week. Too many treats can make your bunny overweight and unhealthy.
  • I have included a list of treats that are acceptable.

Bedding…

  • All of my bunnies have litter boxes and are litter trained. I cannot guarantee your bunny is fully litter trained. If you choose to use a litter box, that will be a smooth transition and is very, very simple to continue with.
  • I use pine shavings in the little pans. Do not ever use cedar (in the litter box or for any bedding) Cedar is poisonous to bunnies. You can also use paper bedding, pine pellet bedding or even kitty litter.
  • Bedding is not essential for rabbits. If you choose to put bedding in their cage, be sure to keep it clean because the bunnies can become dirty and stained.

Other…

  • Rabbits need their nails trimmed about once every 2 months. You can use finger nail clippers or dog nail clippers.
  • Holland lops do get bored. They enjoy getting out of their cage to exercise. They like to play with cardboard, wood blocks, tunnels, toilet paper tubes, hanging toys, etc. Just make sure it is safe for them to eat. They will chew!
